Another Study Tip: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone (Literally)

Studying from home sounds like a great idea — until it isn’t. Sure, I have a home office. It’s set up beautifully from my medical coding days, complete with desk space, Wi-Fi, all my study guides, and every resource I could possibly need. But here’s the problem: it’s also the easiest place to get distracted.
In the comfort of my own home, I can do just about anything but study. I’ll start by reviewing a few pages, then suddenly I’m watching TV, taking a nap, or deep-cleaning my entire kitchen because I noticed one thing out of place. Sound familiar?
That’s why my best advice is this: study in a setting that cuts out as close to 100% of distractions as possible.
For me, that means packing up my books and heading to Barnes & Noble, or a local coffee shop. It’s 10 minutes away, and once I’m there, I’ve got no excuses. I can’t clean. I can’t binge Netflix. All I can do is sit, focus, and get the work done — and honestly, that’s exactly what I need.
The downside? There aren’t always enough tables, and so I’m always in the market for a new go-to study spot. But the upside is huge: when your environment supports your focus, your results show it.
So if you’re struggling to stay disciplined at home, don’t beat yourself up. Just change your setting. It’s not about motivation — it’s about making distraction harder to reach.
